PlayStation Portal in 2026: Complete Guide Before PS6
Author: Martin Pavlič / / Updated:
PlayStation Portal is an 8-inch handheld remote player for PS5 and PS5 Pro over Wi-Fi, not a standalone console.
In 2026 it costs roughly $199 via official channels, with cloud streaming added via PlayStation Plus Premium without needing a PS5 as host. Compare:
| Store | Price (USD) |
|---|---|
| Sony Direct | $199 |
| Amazon | $199 - $229 |
| Best Buy | $199 - $229 |
| Used market | $149 - $189 |
Total setup example: Portal $199 + PS5 Slim disc host $649.99 (post-hike) + Plus Premium year $159.99 = about $1,009 total chain, vs future PS6 price Digital $799 standalone.

Versus others
Portal lacks native compute; Steam Deck and rumored PS6 vs Xbox handhelds run natively. Native rivals now also include the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld, which plays on-device rather than streaming. Portal’s niche is in-home remote flex, now extended via cloud.
Will PlayStation Portal work with PS6?
Yes, almost certainly: Remote Play support via a PS6 system update is near-certain, and Plus Premium cloud streaming already works without any host console. Portal owners are safe for the jump; the only open question is whether Sony adds PS6-specific features. See cloud gaming and timing in PS6 release date.
Portal vs PS6 handheld (Canis): which option wins?
Different jobs: Portal streams at $199 while Canis is rumored to play natively at about $649 (a pre-crisis estimate), so Portal wins on price and Canis on independence. Do not confuse the two devices when planning your purchase.
| Area | Portal | Canis (rumored) |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $199 | ~$649 pre-crisis estimate |
| Compute | None, streams only | Native RDNA 5 hardware |
| Needs a host | PS5/PS6 or Premium cloud | No |
| Best for | In-home second screen | Travel and offline play |
